"Leaving" for Others

By: Yael Sinai and Sydney Hecht

In Parshat Emor perek chaf gimmel pasuk chafgimmel it says, “When you reap the harvest from your land, you shall not remove the corners of your field…for the poor…you shall leave them.”
God tells the Jewish people to leave a corner of their fields unharvested so that the poor can come and take from it. Instead of telling Am Yisrael to give to the poor, Hashem tells them to leave a portion for the poor. The difference between these two words is significant. In an effort to not embarrass the person who must take from the corner of the field, the landowner should not directly give the crops to the poor person. Rather the poor person will be able to come at a time when no one is looking and simply take whatever was left for him. By doing this, it can alsodecrease the poor person’s emotional pain of knowing that at that very moment, he is dependent on someone else for a necessity.

With the end of the year sadly approaching, we can take these last few weeks as an opportunity to do things for other people, not to receive a reward or gratitude in return. We must realize how fortunate we are and take a little bit of what God gave us and leave it for others.
