"The Chesed Test"

By:

Our story begins with Elizezer being sent by Avraham to find a wife for Yitzchak, in order for this to happen he davens to Hashem to create a coincidence and help him find this wife. Eliezer searches for a woman who will embody the great trait of chesed, Avrahams middah. Eliezer vows that whoever will come to give his camels water will marry his masters servant, Yitzchak. Rivka passes the test and thus is taken back to marry Yitzchak. When Rivka follows Eliezer out of her family home on a new life journey, Eliezer is referred to as an ish, the main man of the story. As they come closer to Avraham’s land they see a man approaching. Rivka ‘falls” when she sees the man approach, either from embarrassment or according to the Neztiv because she begins to fall for him emotionally. Rivka turns to Eliezer and referring to him as a servant asks him who the approaching ish is. Her idea of who is a man changes as soon as she sees Yitzchak. When she finds out the the ish is Yitzchak she covers her face, perhaps because she felt unworthy of such a great man. Eliezer then tells Yitzchak what events had taken place in order to bring Rivka, and Yitzchak marries Rivka without even a mention of Avraham and his approval. Because Rivka has passed the “chesed test” she is approved in Avraham’s eyes, but that is not enough for Yitzchak. He wanted to show her what her potential was. He does this by bringing her into his mother’s tent, so that she would understand her role as one of the imahot. For me this year is a lot about chesed but it’s also about maximizing my potential and finding out what my place is within the Jewish community."The Chesed Test"
