Gratitude
By: Keren Shetrit
We are all still in shock from the horrific tragedy that took place in Yerushalayim yesterday. It hits even closer to home because the boy who passed away was close to our age and he was also Canadian and most of us here are North American. In the coming parshiot we see the conflict develop between Yaakov and Eisav. This represents the persecution that people in Israel feel on a daily basis. They live adjacent to individuals whose goal is to wipe us off the face of the Earth. On Thanksgiving it is a good time as any to remind ourselves of how lucky we are to have freedom of religion back home. It should not be taken for granted to have this opportunity and we should take this time to appreciate the ability we have to be shomrei torah umitzvot back home. Whether we are in Israel or back home, there will always be people who are not happy with us practicing Yiddishkeit. A lesson we can take from this incident is to never lose sight of the bracha it is to daven, learn and be a bat Yisarel every single day. As today is Rosh Chodesh it’s the start of a new month and “new beginning” we should take this opportunity to try new things and make it the best month ever! We are thankful every day when we say modeh ani and modim but on Thanksgiving it is an additional reminder to appreciate everything that Hashem gives to us on a daily basis. May we never see any more tzarot and may we be zoche to be connected to Judaism freely until the coming of Moshiach tzidkeinu bimheira biyameinu
