Chanuka

By: Shlomit Wachsberg

As we approach Chanuka, we open ourselves up to the light, warmth, and brightness of its eight nights of flames. There is a seemingly strange Halachik phenomenon which prohibits any use or benefit from the flames- the fire cannot be used to light another candle and the light it provides cannot be benefited from to read. The neirot are only to provide light, as we sing in Haneirot Halalu- “Ela lir’otam bilvad.” The Slonimer Rebbe ponders and explains that the flames of the Chanuka lights are meant to ignite the soul of a Jew on fire for the service of and connection to G-d. The flames serve as guiding lights illuminating our path toward our Creator.  The Chanuka lights are a product of pure olive oil- שמן זית זך- whose letters are shared with נשמה- our souls. The Menorah’s light provides a penetrating clarity whose depth resonates so deeply within us, setting our neshamot ablaze with passion and warmth for Avodat HaShem.  Where is HaShem? The Kotzker Rebbe answers “wherever He is let in.” Chanuka is the time when the piece of HaShem that resides within us is reignited with clarity in connection with Him.  Wishing everyone a happy Chanuka filled with brilliantly bright clarity, purity and warmth!

Good Shabbos!
