A Piece of the Puzzle

By: Libby Markovitch and Eliana Weinstock

Have you ever tried solving a puzzle without viewing the picture on the box? You might think that’s crazy, but that’s what life is. Life is often putting together the puzzle pieces without seeing the bigger picture. Two Parshiot ago Yosef had multiple dreams in which he envisioned what his life would  be. His brothers will be bowing down to him and he will be king over everyone. But before any of that could happen, Yosef was sold as a slave, thrown in jail, and lives a life without his family. This is for sure not the life that Yosef had envisioned.

In this week’s Parshat, Parsha Vayigash, Yosef reveals his identity to his brothers “I am Yosef your brother, whom you sold into Egypt”. At this point Yosef views his brothers as the reason why his puzzle isn’t being completed. However, in his speech to his brothers he tells them not to be upset with themselves because they sold him because really it was Hashem’s plan. Yosef ended up saving many people’s lives due to the famine. While Yosef was speaking to his brothers, he realized that it truly was Hashem’s plan and his brothers were the small puzzle pieces of the bigger picture.  Oftentimes in our lives, it’s hard to see the reason why certain things happen to each of us. We can learn from Yosef in this week’s Parsha that Hashem has a reason for everything in our lives and sometimes  He is the only one that sees the bigger picture of the puzzle.
