The Brachot and Their Impact

By: Aliza Bierly and Tamar Furer

Is it possible to interfere with God's plan? In this week's Parsha Yaakov and Esav are supposed to receive their brachot, due to Rivka's suggested costume change for Yaakov. Yaakov received the Bracha intended for Esav. It seems that the brachot were thrown off course, but we're they really?

After Esav realizes that Yaakov had stolen his Bracha, Rivka makes plans for Yaakov to leave. Before he leaves, Yitzchak blesses him again. why does he bless him again, this time with a different bracha? Perhaps the second bracha is the bracha that he was supposed to get originally. It is more in line with his personality and life goals.

But Esav is devastated by the bracha given to Yaakov. The Torah records him crying out. The same words appear in Megilat Esther when Mordecai cries. Breisheet Rabba connects these words and says Bnei Yisrael pay for Yaakov making Esav cry in the future.

When Yaakov takes Esav's Bracha he had no idea of the long term impact of making his brother cry. Part of what we are doing in Amit this year is hopefully influencing our Beit Hayeled kids lives for the better. Who knows what the long term positive impact of that can be?
